Week 4 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
  • I was surprised to learn that creativity can be developed or created. Up to now I always thought creativity was something you were born with, something innate.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
  • I did not find any parts of this reading confusing because it was all very straight forward.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
  • Why did you not include activities in between the readings in the other chapters? I found the activities engaging and helped me remain interested.
  • What are some ways to stimulate the right side of the brain more? I would ask this to possibly expand the use of my right hemisphere.
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
  • I do not find myself disagreeing with anything the author has said.

Top 5 World Problems

Top 5 Problems
1. Global Warming
2. The increase in gun violence
3. The abuse of animals for consumption
4. The use of photo-editors
5. The high rate of depression and anxiety

The way that I made my list is by considering the amount of people that these problems affect, or will affect. Global Warming, for example, in the end, affects every single human, animal, and plant on Earth; therefore it took the number one spot. Gun Violence and abuse of animal consumption follow because they contribute to pain and death of the victims it touches. The final two fell on this list in the following order because I noticed a correlation between the two. The expectations set from the lies of photo-editors have an influence on several of today’s cases of depression and anxiety.

Top 5 Solutions
1. Depression and anxiety - A solution would be to spend less time with technology and interact more with others and spend more time in nature.
2. The use of photo-editors - A solution would be to force companies to place an edited label on the bottom of every edited photograph so that the consumer can know and possibly decrease the number of edited photographs.
3. Gun Violence - A solution would be to make it harder to attain a gun and run more background checks.
4. Abuse of animals for consumption - Some solutions are for more people to become vegetarian or to ensure you get your mean from local famers.
5. Global Warming - A solution could be to decrease carbon emissions around the world.

I made this list in the order of what I believe society would be more likely to put in the effort and attempt to change. The reason I selected the solution to depression and anxiety as the most implementable is because it does not cost anything and it only requires the individual to spend some time going out, however, I know how tricky treating depression and anxiety can be, in this list, its still the one with the most easily accessible solution because it all falls in the hands of the person trying to treat it. After that I began to notice a somewhat correlation between the two lists: they appear to have flipped. For example, global warming was the number one problem but it’s the number 5 solution. Reason I set it as last is because of how many people the solution would require in order for it to be done as best as possible. Also because of how long it will take to see its affects on the world in comparison to other problems, which experience instant reaction, therefore I feel like society would be less inclined to tackle the problem right away.
