Week 4 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
  • I was surprised to learn that creativity can be developed or created. Up to now I always thought creativity was something you were born with, something innate.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
  • I did not find any parts of this reading confusing because it was all very straight forward.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
  • Why did you not include activities in between the readings in the other chapters? I found the activities engaging and helped me remain interested.
  • What are some ways to stimulate the right side of the brain more? I would ask this to possibly expand the use of my right hemisphere.
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
  • I do not find myself disagreeing with anything the author has said.

Top 5 World Problems

Top 5 Problems
1. Global Warming
2. The increase in gun violence
3. The abuse of animals for consumption
4. The use of photo-editors
5. The high rate of depression and anxiety

The way that I made my list is by considering the amount of people that these problems affect, or will affect. Global Warming, for example, in the end, affects every single human, animal, and plant on Earth; therefore it took the number one spot. Gun Violence and abuse of animal consumption follow because they contribute to pain and death of the victims it touches. The final two fell on this list in the following order because I noticed a correlation between the two. The expectations set from the lies of photo-editors have an influence on several of today’s cases of depression and anxiety.

Top 5 Solutions
1. Depression and anxiety - A solution would be to spend less time with technology and interact more with others and spend more time in nature.
2. The use of photo-editors - A solution would be to force companies to place an edited label on the bottom of every edited photograph so that the consumer can know and possibly decrease the number of edited photographs.
3. Gun Violence - A solution would be to make it harder to attain a gun and run more background checks.
4. Abuse of animals for consumption - Some solutions are for more people to become vegetarian or to ensure you get your mean from local famers.
5. Global Warming - A solution could be to decrease carbon emissions around the world.

I made this list in the order of what I believe society would be more likely to put in the effort and attempt to change. The reason I selected the solution to depression and anxiety as the most implementable is because it does not cost anything and it only requires the individual to spend some time going out, however, I know how tricky treating depression and anxiety can be, in this list, its still the one with the most easily accessible solution because it all falls in the hands of the person trying to treat it. After that I began to notice a somewhat correlation between the two lists: they appear to have flipped. For example, global warming was the number one problem but it’s the number 5 solution. Reason I set it as last is because of how many people the solution would require in order for it to be done as best as possible. Also because of how long it will take to see its affects on the world in comparison to other problems, which experience instant reaction, therefore I feel like society would be less inclined to tackle the problem right away.

Week 3 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
  • I was quite surprised to learn about the several views on risk in the mind of an entrepreneur.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
  • I found the section about stress confusing.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
  • Why do you think speeches are such an important thing as an entrepreneur? He emphasized on this so heavily that I would love to hear his opinions on it.
  • Why would ethical decision making have extended consequences? Why would an ethically correct decision have risks?
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
  • I do not find myself disagreeing with anything the author has said.

World's Biggest Problems

1. A major problem today is the use of photo-editors. Every magazine cover or ad has without a doubt been put through Photoshop or some similar application, leading others to believe that that is what they are supposed to look like, even the model doesn't look like that. A solution would be to force companies to place an edited label on the bottom of every edited photograph so that the consumer can know and possibly decrease the number of edited photographs.
2. Another problem is the abuse of animals for consumption. Humans have no intention of stopping their meat consumption but majority also does not know where their food is coming from. Majority of these animals being consumed are injected with hormones from the moment they are born. Some grow so large from these hormones that their legs can’t even hold their bodies. Some solutions are for more people to become vegetarian or to ensure you get your mean from local famers.
3. Another problem is the possibility of Donald Trump becoming president of the United States. A racist, a sexist, and so much worse. Trump winning could very easily be the end of America. A solution is to not vote for Donald Trump.
4. Another problem is recent lack of physical activity. With the rise of technology, almost everything can be done online or on your phone, even your groceries and laundry! A solution is to resist the temptations of technology and go out.
5. Another problem is global warming. Temperatures continue to rise, animals continue to get closer and closer to losing their habitats, and we continue to pollute the Earth. A solution could be to decrease carbon emissions around the world.
6. Another problem is the increase in obesity. Today’s children rarely play outside because of all their video games and phones. With little play, they often stay home and eat and eat without realizing how much or what and now with a fast food restaurant in every corner, it’s become even easier to grab a quick greasy bite. A solution is for parents to step in at an early age and restrict their technology uses and encourage them to go out more.
7. Another problem is the high rate of depression and anxiety. With today’s technology, more people talk via text or messenger than they do in real life, leaded to a large fear of interactions or feeling of loneliness. A solution would be to spend less time with technology and interact more with others and spend more time in nature.
8. Another problem is the increase in gun violence in this country and the large amount of lives lost because of them. Several lost by accident. A solution would be to make it harder to attain a gun and run more background checks.
9. Another problem is the lack of women in STEM fields. With society continuing to tell women that they should be in gender appropriate positions, it's no wonder women only make up 24% of workers in STEM fields. A solution would be for parents to stop telling little girls to be more feminine and to offer more scholarships for women interested in STEM.
10. Another problem is this increase in machismo, or aggressive masculinity. It is already a mans world, there is no need to heighten your masculinity or belittle another gender. A solution would be to educate children on how people of different cultures live socially and give different perspectives on gender. Also, to be taught better respect towards others, especially women.

Week 2 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
  • I was quite surprised to learn that the newer and smaller companies are creating the most jobs around the world instead of the larger ones that have been around for decades.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
  • When the author said "the things that work and those that don't are pretty much the same..."
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
  • Do you believe that technology has made it easier or harder to be an entrepreneur? I ask because technology could certainly open doors for a business but at the same times its opening millions of door for other businesses, making things even more competitive.
  • Is there anything that those companies could have done after realizing that they were failing that would have saved them money? Well, once they know things are not going well, maybe they could have promoted more, maybe but the company on hold, or maybe something else. It could be helpful to know.
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
  • I do not find myself disagreeing with anything the author has said.

Bug List

Things that bug me:

1. People who cant make decisions.
Why? Because sometimes other peoples plans depends on that one person and if they can’t give a legitimate answer than it directly impacts another person. Like should we get a house next year? "I don't know, maybe."
2. Pedestrians that cross intersections diagonally.
Why? It's completely unsafe for both the pedestrian and the driver.
3. When someone litters. Especially at nature parks.
Why? In their minds its fine because "that’s what we pay taxes for" but our taxes should not be going to cleaning up the roads.
4. When people stay glued on their phones at a concert or movie.
Why? Because you paid all this money to go, enjoy yourself, and actually watch the performance. Recording every second on Snapchat is not the same thing.
5. When people don't tip their waiters.
Why? I've been a waitress before and know the true importance those few extra bucks make.
7. When you're talking to someone and they won't get off their phones or look at you.
Why? Because it’s often like talking to a wall and it can get quite exhausting. Not to mention how disrespectful it is.
8. When people don't wash their dishes after they cook.
Why? Because we run out of dishes, it looks disgusting, and its makes it harder for me to wash my own.
9. When my roommates put tuple wear on the very top shelf in the cabinet.
Why? Because I am much shorter than them and if I want to store food, that means I have to climb to the counter and stand on it to reach the shelf.
10. When my boyfriend leaves 15 dirty cups scattered all over the apartment instead of reusing them.
Why? When someone needs one, there's not a single one available because they're all dirty thanks to him.
11. When my roommates want to act funny and close the front door on me right when they walk in.
Why? Because why? Now I have to stop and open the door or, sometimes, even reach for my keys.
12. When people ask me if I know how to dance because I'm Hispanic.
Why? Because not all Hispanics know how to dance, and because growing up my family would always ask me to dance.
13. When people disrespect their elders.
Why? Because it hurts me to watch such disrespect take place.
14. When someone opens my bedroom door without knocking.
Why? Because it's supposed to be my private room; they don't have to necessarily ask for permission, but at least knock.
15. A truck that takes up two parking spots.
Why? Just because you have a truck, doesn't mean you own the lot.
17. A truck with monster tires and spiked rims in the middle of Miami.
Why? Why in the world would you need such a huge truck and with spiked rims in such a large city as Miami? When there's heavy traffic, he endangers everyone on the road.
18. The fact that the closest Apple store is 2 hours from Gainesville.
Why? Because I'm used to always having one within a 5 mile radius.
19. How small the Walmart on Archer and 34th is.
Why? Because 3 aisles of food is never enough.
20. When people ride their bikes or longboards through Turlington when it’s crowded.
Why? Because they know how highly probable it is that they will hit someone.

Reflection: As it turns out, my biggest bugs are things that people do or just people. This assignment was much harder than I expected because, despite managing to find 20 "bugs", it took a lot of thinking and analyzing my everyday routine to realize what bothers me. It's most likely because I'm used to just accepting and/or ignoring those things because in the end I probably don't have any control over them so I don't see the point in letting them bother me so much.

My Entrepreneurship Story

A few months ago, I created a beauty Instagram. After several years of having friends telling me to post more makeup photos as well as having several other friends telling me that they're getting annoyed of all these beauty photos, I decided I would make an independent one just dedicated to beauty. Little did I know at the time how much that would change my life. Shortly after creating the blog and posting a few photos, some beauty companies recognized me and began to repost my photos on their own websites, increasing my number of followers and website traffic. Attached below is one of my Instagram beauty posts. After months of using my photos for their websites, they reached out to me with an interest to collaborate. At that moment, I realized that I was becoming an entrepreneur. Today, I have several collaborations with various companies; my most favorite one being with this startup makeup company that reached out to me to be the "face", or in this case "lips", of their brand new lipstick line. Up to now, all of this has simply been a hobby of mine but I am beginning to realize just how much I truly love and enjoy it. Enough so that I now have a goal to create my very own beauty line, which ties into why I chose this class. The reason I decided to take ENT 3003 is because I wish to gain more knowledge on how to truly embrace the entrepreneur in me that I just recently realized existed.

Introduction

Hello there,

My name is Evelyn Fernandez and I was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. My mother, around the time I was 4, won the Visa Lottery in Cuba, which meant that my family could move to America. So, shortly after I turned 5, my family and I moved to Miami, which is where I was raised and where my parents still currently live. My family? Well, it’s your typical crazy loud Latino family. Here I am attaching a photo of my dad and I at Santa's Enchanted Forest, a Miami Christmas Theme Park. My parents, still to this day, do not feel comfortable speaking English, so Spanish has always been the main, or only, language spoken at home; which makes for an interesting experience whenever my non-Spanish-speaking boyfriend of 3 years comes to visit. I am now a third year Mechanical Engineering student that’s still trying to adapt to a small town. I have traveled to a few places, mostly to visit family: Ecuador, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, California, Georgia (because its so close!), and obviously Cuba. Very soon I am hoping to study abroad or volunteer somewhere in Europe!
